Guide to Selling Used Cars
Selling a used car is more than putting a sign in the windshield with an asking price and phone number. There are several steps to take before making that sign. Just like anything that is sold, the way it's presented is a big factor in how much people are willing to pay. You can help increase your cars appearance and value with a little effort.
Determine Value
Research how much your vehicle is worth. Kelley Blue Book is a great reference for the value of used vehicles. Also do research online and in used car magazines to see what similar vehicles are sold for. This will provide a nice gauge for you to determine your asking price. Three big factors for determining value are: mileage, condition and special features.
Clean Vehicle
Spend the time and money to get your vehicle cleaned since condition is a big factor in value. Most people are willing to spend extra money purchasing a vehicle that looks good. Have your vehicle professionally waxed and the interior thoroughly detailed, including shampooing seats and carpets.
Where to Sell
Some people just park their vehicle in the front lawn with a "for sale" sign. You can reach a much bigger audience for a reasonable price if you also list it online and in print advertisement. There are several automobile classified websites and magazines. Just determine which ones reach the largest group of people near you. You might even get lucky if someone driving by and offers you a good price, but don't count on it. Take advantage of every resource you have available.
Completing the Sale
Once you've found a buyer and agreed on a price, make sure you complete the sale properly. It would be wise to make the buyer pay with cash or certified check. Don't take any chances on a personal check bouncing. Make sure you also follow your states laws on completing proper paperwork.
