Guide to the Best Aetna Health Insurance Plan for Individuals

Aetna Life Insurance Company provides health insurance plans for individuals, families and businesses.  Aetna's various health plans for individuals offer different levels of coverage, deductibles, co-pays and premiums.  Determining what type of coverage you require will help determine which Aetna health insurance plan is best for you.

Aetna's plans vary by state and in some states, individuals may qualify as a business group of one and may be eligible for guaranteed issue, small group health plans.  For individual health insurance plans, some of the available options include:

Managed Choice Open Access:  There are various plans available within this category.  Each plan has a different deductible, co-pay and coinsurance level.  Deductibles range from $1,500 to $5,000 with co-pays ranging from $25 to $30.  Coinsurance is the portion that is the insured's responsibility and is typically around 20% once the deductible has been met.

High Deductible Plan:  This plan offers lower premium costs and a Health Savings Account (HSA) for tax-advantaged savings.  These plans have no co-pays and coinsurance once the deductible has been met.

Your Value Plans: These plans provide affordability with lower monthly premiums.  The lower monthly premiums are offset by greater cost sharing by the insured.  This means that after a certain number of office visits, the insured is responsible for 100% of the cost of the doctor's visit.

Preventative and Hospital Care Plans:  These plans provide coverage for preventive care and major health care services.  The more narrow scope of coverage for these plans results in a lower monthly premium.

To determine which Aetna health plan is best, take a look at your medical history to determine how much you typically spend each year in medical costs and what types of visits and services are required.  As a healthy individual who makes infrequent trips to the doctor, one of Aetna's value plans may be a good fit.  However, if you suffer from a chronic illness that requires frequent checkups, one of the other plans may be a better fit.
