Gun safety is an issue that raises many important concerns for people who feel very strongly about the issue. Some people feel that it is our constitutional right to bear arms in the name of protection. Other people feel that guns are dangerous to keep in your home and should only be owned by qualified professionals.
Should you talk to you kids about gun safety?
If you are going to have a gun in your home, or know that there is a gun in the home of another family member or friend that your child visits often, then you should discuss gun safety with your child. If you simply tell your child that they should stay away from it and not touch it, they will be intrigued by the firearm. You need to let them know why they should not touch it and how dangerous a gun can be.
What are the most important gun safety rules?
Handling a gun with respect is the first key to gun safety. Be sure to always point a gun in a downward direction away from anyone or anything, even if you do not plan to fire it. Accidents can happen, and in the case that your gun was to discharge a bullet on accident you want to be sure that it is not pointed in a direction where it could accidentally hurt someone. You should also be sure to keep your finger off the trigger unless you are planning to shoot the gun. Be sure to never keep your gun loaded and keep the safety on when not in use. This way if your gun was to fall into the wrong hands, it will not cause unintended injury. Always store your bullets for your gun in a separate location so that a child does not have access.
Should I get gun safety training?
If you plan on owning a firearm, you should take a safety class so that you are able to operate and store your gun in a safe manner to avoid accidents that could lead to injury or death. There are also youth gun safety classes through the National Rifle Association that you can enroll your children in so that they know the dangers of firearms, and are taught not to handle a firearm as well as the safe way to handle one. Your children should know how dangerous guns are if you plan on keeping one in your home.
