Home Remedies for Bathtub Mildew Removal
Mildew is the early stage of mold, which is a fungus that thrives in damp, dark areas. Because your bathtub is in a location that is frequently wet and rarely lit, it isn't uncommon for mildew to form in and around your tub. Fortunately, there are simple home remedies that are useful and effective in removing mildew.
- Vinegar - Spray distilled white vinegar directly on your bathtub's mildew. It is an effective method of removal that is safe for humans and the environment. Although vinegar has a very strong odor, it will actually freshen the air once it dissipates. Keep a small spray bottle of vinegar in your bathroom and use it to spray down your bathtub after every bath to help prevent the mildew from returning.
- Tea Tree Oil - Tea tree oil is known for its antifungal properties and for being an antiseptic. It is another home solution that is safe for the environment and won't harm you or your family, although it does have a strong odor and can be expensive. To use tea tree oil, mix two teaspoons with two cups of warm water in a spray bottle. Spray your tube and scrub with a sponge.
- Bleach - Although bleach is a chemical, it is an effective home remedy for bathtub mildew removal. Open the windows in your bathroom if you have them or turn on a fan and leave the door open for circulation. In a spray bottle mix equal parts bleach and water and spray the mildew directly. Use a damp sponge to wipe the area down, rinse and dry thoroughly.
