Requirements for Children's Horseback Riding Helmets

Horseback Riding Helmets for Kids

Children enjoy horseback riding; however, it can be a dangerous sport for growing bodies. It is important that children are properly protected when horseback riding by wearing a riding helmet that will prevent head trauma from occurring in the event of an accident. It is vital that a child’s horseback riding helmet fits properly in order to fully protect them.

  • If you are purchasing a horseback riding helmet for a child, you need to ensure that it has passed the safety standards set by the Safety Equipment Institute. A horseback riding helmet that has been tested will be marked inside with by ASTM, or American Safety Test Method.

  • Do not buy horseback riding helmets for children secondhand unless you are sure that the helmet has not been involved in an accident. Horseback riding helmets that have been involved in an accident may not prevent injury and should be thrown away.

  • Be sure that a child’s riding helmet fits properly. If the helmet is too big then it will not properly protect the child in the case of a fall. A child’s horseback riding helmet should fit securely, but not tight enough to leave a mark on the child’s head. A chin strap should secure the helmet to the child’s head so that it stays in place while riding.

  • It is typical for children that participate in western riding events not to wear a helmet during competition events; this is not recommended for the safety of the child. There are helmets on the market that are small enough to be worn underneath a western style cowboy hat that cannot be seen during a competition, yet can provide head protection in the event of an accident.
