How to Make a Moving Checklist

Household Moving Checklist

When you are planning on moving it is important to keep track of everything that needs to be done. With the chaos that goes hand in hand with moving it is extremely easy to forget many things that should be done during all three of the moving stages.

Before you move:

  • Have a garage sale to rid yourself of extra items.

  • Purchase enough boxes for each room.

  • Decide whether you will hire movers or do it yourself.

  • Notify the post office of your address change.

  • Notify utilities of service cancellation or moving.

  • Change addresses on catalogs and magazines.

  • Prepare a list of friends, co-workers and businesses that need to be notified.

  • Set up utilities for your new residence.

  • Should you need extra storage, reserve a facility ahead of time.

  • Check with your bank to see if they are in the area you will move to. If not, research available banks in your new area.

  • Make travel arrangements for pets.

  • Gather all health, school and legal records.

During the move:

  • Check all closets and cabinets for items which may be left behind.

  • Keep all boxes separated for easier unpacking.

  • Clearly label each box.

  • Check to make sure everything is shut off. For example: water valves, furnace, A/C.

  • Check that all windows and doors are locked.

After the move:

  • Check with your new post office for any held mail.

  • Check into license and registration requirements in your new city.

  • Keep all receipts related to the move in a safe place.

  • Send all school, health and legal information to the appropriate places.
