Housing Authority Renters' Rights

Across the country, there are dozens of municipalities and states that have their own housing authorities. These government agencies help people in low-income or difficult situations rent housing. However, just because you are receiving government assistance does not mean you are without rights.

  • Right to fair rent and fees- Fees should not be exorbitant and rent should be in line with other apartments or homes in the area. There should not be any types of hidden fees that are charged after the lease is signed. All fees and charges should clearly be listed on the lease.

  • Right to privacy- A landlord cannot enter the home without the permission of the tenant unless the police have a search warrant. Although the landlord does have the right to inspect the property and look around inside, notice must be given first. Also, the landlord does not have the right to give your personal information to other government agencies without your authorization.

  • Right to safety- The home should be in good working order. All parts of the home should be operational and safe to use. If there is something in the home that is broken or unsafe, it is the responsibility of the landlord to fix the repair at their expense, unless any negligence was involved on the part of the tenant.

  • Right to security- The home that you are renting must have adequate security. This means that it must have locks on door and windows. If the area has any issues with crime, it is the job to the landlord to work with local police or a private security company to make sure that tenants are safe.
