How Are Video Games Made?
Due to modern technology, learning how to make video games isn't so hard anymore. Because modern gaming software programming is not required anymore, making the process a bit easier. The following steps give some basic guidelines on how to make a video game.
- Brainstorm several ideas. You will need to decide what genre your games will be in.
- Write out your plot on paper. To do this you can close your eyes and try to visualize the game's plot. After visualization, write down what you saw, and create a storyboard. You can create a storyboard by drawing out each action, describing it and captioning what characters are saying. If you can't draw you can use a program such as StoryQuick. This way you can plan your scenes with pre-made drawings or rudimentary sketches. When you are done storyboarding, transfer all of your ideas into a script. This will help you organize for both you and voice-over actors.
- Plan out your game layout. This is important because it creates a specific type of atmosphere for your player. You can start this by drawing in a notebook. Make sure that the layouts are organized according to how they are going to appear in the game. Make sure that your write down the specific significance of objects within each scene.
- Make a flowchart that organizes the video game's actions. You can create a flow chart by first defining your process. The results of this process will go in rectangles which will be connected with each other through lined arrows. If the results of these actions go any further, then you will have to create more ovals and rectangles. You may also add any other symbols, as needed.
- Decide on the console you are going to use to distribute your game. A current and easy game console for beginningers is the PC. The reason is because it doesn't phase out like other next generation consoles and it isn't too hard to find game design software.
- Design with video game software. Two programs that you can use on a PC are Reality and Genesis 3D. Both of these PC programs are free. For the XBox 360, you can make video games by using the XNA Game Studio Express. This is also free. For the Nintendo Wii you can use the program WiiWare. This software is not free, it costs $2,000 and requires approval from Nintendo.
- Add multimedia to your video game. This is an important element because it helps players feel they are in a new world. For voice-overs you can ask friends and family. For photographs and artwork, you should consider using stock photos sites. To create music for your video game, cosider hiring a musician. If you can't do that, buy private label music. This kind of music is pre-made music in which you own the rights. You can find its marketing forums on Amazon.
