How Art Affects the Brain

How Art Affects Our Life

Art can be such a controversial subject. One person's trash is another man's treasure. What is it about art that has everyone so riled up? Art is whatever you make it to be. One artist can spend a few minutes creating something that looks as if a child was responsible for it and receive raves on top of raves, ranting about how original it is. Another artist could have spent years on one piece, only to have no one care.

Art not only affects our life, but it also affects our senses. Art can actually help you sleep. Colors often trigger a person's mood. When a person has a hard time falling asleep, the color of the walls might be a factor. Bright reds, oranges and electric blues can overly stimulate a person's brain, leaving her to feel edgy, jumpy and unable to sleep. It is suggested that earth tones such as browns, muted blues and soft, forest greens can calm a person's nerves.

The same thing can be said for a piece of artwork. A person who has a hard time falling asleep would probably not fare any better sleeping in the same room with a painting by H.R. Giger. His work was used as inspiration for the alien creature in the movie "Alien."

Art also makes us think. Psychotherapy sometimes uses art to bring people to a place of confrontation, peace and acceptance. A little boy who has suffered a traumatic loss can focus on his recovery through drawing pictures.

For couples, art can seduce. One picture of a lone, nude girl tucked away innocently on a beach can play a master's role in getting a frustrated married couple back into each other's arms. A delicious, yummy painting by Michael Pukac is a sumptuous ingredient for lovemaking.
