How to Compare Online Bank Interest Rates

How Bank Interest Rates are Calculated

Interest rates exist as a way for the bank to make money off of loans they provide to you, as well as a way for you to earn on the money you save with the financial institution. The interest rate you are given depends on a number of circumstances and varies in between banks.

One of the most important considerations that a bank makes when determining the interest rate is the current economic condition. One of the major factors that are considered is the condition of the stock market. In order for a bank to maintain their level of profitability, they must ensure that the interest rates are higher when the economy is not at its best. Likewise, if the economy is in good shape, the interest rates will be lower so that the bank is in line with the competition.

The interest rate that the bank uses can also be affected by the government rates. If the federal rate is high, then the bank’s rate is going to be higher in order to stay at a profitable rate as a business. If the federal rate is lower, you will most likely find the bank providing customers with loans.

The overall basis of how interest rates are calculated has to do primarily with the direct and indirect profit that the bank receives. The direct profit is the amount of money the bank makes off of the interest rates that are charged on loans that are provided to customers. The indirect profit is taken into consideration when providing an interest rate to accounts so that customers earn on their savings and investments. When banks calculate the rates, they have to ensure that the rates they provide does not end up losing the institution money.
