How Do Bookstores Buy Back Books?
Many bookstores, especially college bookstores, are able to buy back books that have previously been purchased. This is a great way to provide discount books to customers as well as make multiple transactions on one book. Buying back books is a win-win situation for the buyer and seller. Here’s how it works:
Purchase a book with a buyback option. A customer purchases a book with the understanding that when he/she is finished with the book, there is an option to return the book for money. The customer will not receive the amount he/she paid for the book, but a discounted rate since the book has been used.
Agree to take care of the book. The customer also agrees not to write in or damage the book beyond the normal wear and tear. If the book is not in good condition, a bookstore does not have to buy it back, so it is critical the book is cared for while being used.
Find out the buyback price. The bookstore may offer a return price of up to 50 percent of the purchase price.
Decide on the buyback option. Many bookstores offer gift cards instead of cash back. The bookstore should let the customer know before purchasing a book whether cash or a gift card will be given in the buy back transaction. Make sure you are clear on what you will receive in return for the sold used book.
Resell the book. Resell the book back to the bookstore so the bookstore may resell the book at a discounted rate.
Note: Used books may or may not be purchased back.
