How Do Unlocked Cell Phones Work?

If you have switched cell phone carriers in the past, you know the frustration of not being able to carry over your favorite pictures, music, games and other personalized items to your new cell phone. If both your current and new cell phone uses a SIM card, you can kiss your past frustrations goodbye by unlocking your phone.

Cell phones encompass our lives daily.  We use them to talk, text, play, and work.  Therefore, we look for cell phones offering the most features for the best price.  Many of us are attracted to a particular phone for its applications, shape, size and unique capabilities. Unfortunately, the “perfect” phone is sometimes provided by carriers that offer expensive packages, require long-term commitment contracts, or both.  When a different carrier offers your preferred cell phone, you have the option to use or purchase an unlocked cell phone.  Unlocked cell phones give users the flexibility to choose the phone they like, regardless of their service provider.  The most common method used to unlock cell phones is the use of a SIM card.

SIM cards are portable chips included with most cell phones to store contacts, photos, games, and various other unique items added by individuals. Cell phones that include SIM cards are already unlocked giving the user the ability to transfer personalized data to any phone containing a SIM card slot.  Occasionally, users have problems retrieving applications and sending photos after switching SIM cards.  If this happens, a call to the cell phone carrier’s customer service will quickly resolve that issue.

Computer programs exist that are capable of unlocking cell phones without SIM cards; however, the requirements of such programs are usually against carrier’s usage policies.  Unlocked cell phones are beneficial to anyone who wants to use their preferred cell phone models with their preferred carrier.
