How Does Sunlight Affect Animals?

Most pet owners treat their pets like members of the family. One of the ways that a responsible pet owner can do this is to ensure the pet gets ample sunlight each day, even if the sunlight is through a window instead of placing the animal outside. Just like humans, most pets need fresh air and sunlight to stay happy and healthy.

Birds, Dogs, Cats and Mammals

Mammals need sunlight to aid in digestion and the production of vitamin D. While it is possible that these animals can survive without sunlight, the animal likely won’t be as healthy as one who has regular exposure to sunlight. Getting some sunlight each day can also help the animal to have a shiny coat or feathers, and it promotes a regular sleep cycle.

Fish

Most species of fish need some sunlight, even if it is in the form of artificial sunlight, to survive. Sunlight helps fish to digest foods, and it keeps their colors vibrant.

All Pets

Regular exposure to sunlight can prevent odd behaviors in pets. For example, a bird that doesn’t get sunlight is likely to start plucking out his own feathers. Rats that don’t get ample sunlight are more likely to eat their babies. Dogs and cats may become depressed without enough sunlight.
