How Does a Dump Truck Work?
Large construction jobs require a lot of dirt to be transported at a time. Most companies use big dump trucks for hauling dirt to and from the job site. These trucks will vary a little in size, but all will haul a lot of dirt.
- Driving the Dump Truck - Most companies require dump truck drivers to earn a special drivers license. The requirements for earning this license will vary with each state. They shouldn't be hard to earn, but there are certain things you need to learn about dump trucks before driving them.
- Filling the Dump Truck- Dirt and debris is placed in the storage area shaped like a box on the back of the dump truck. These areas are very sturdy with high walls. They can hold a lot of dirt, stone or anything that needs moved from a job site. Usually the dump truck is parked next to an excavator that is scooping out dirt and debris with its bucket.
- Dumping the Debris - The dump truck is driven to wherever the dump site is located after the storage area is filled. The most common way the load is dumped is by a hydraulic piston attached to the storage area. The piston allows the storage area to tilt at a high angle. The dirt and debris slides out the back of the storage area easily when it's tilted at a high angle. There is a latch at the back door that needs to be unhooked to allow the debris to slide out.
