How Does a Grapefruit Diet Work?
You are ready to try a new diet. You know dieting is difficult and there are many different diets on the market today. You’ve tried eating only proteins and you’ve drank enough pre-made shakes you can’t stand the smell anymore. You’ve heard about the grapefruit diet, but you are not sure how it works and if it is successful.
Here is how the grapefruit diet actually works.
The grapefruit diet began around the early 1930’s and although the results are unproven, many people believe that grapefruit contains a special enzyme that causes the body to burn fat more quickly.
Many people combine the grapefruit diet with other well-known successful diets including The Atkins Diet and The South Beach Diet.
Some people believe that grapefruit has the ability to reduce insulin levels allowing the body to burn fat more quickly. Again, this is not a scientific fact, but many people have found success on the grapefruit diet.
Successful grapefruit dieters usually eat a high protein diet in combination with grapefruits. A half of a grapefruit is eaten with each meal and snack for a total of two full grapefruits per day.
The grapefruit diet usually lasts 7 – 10 days. Some people will stay on it for 21 days, but those people are encouraged to stop eating grapefruit during days 9 and 10 to help make the diet work better.
Doctors encourage grapefruit dieters to eat between 800 and 1000 calories a day in addition to the two grapefruits. Decreasing your calorie intake to this level will help you lose weight without the grapefruits.
Because grapefruits have a high water contents, dieters should also drink at least 64 ounces or 8 glasses of water a day.
Grapefruits are high in vitamin C. So, even if no weight loss occurs on the grapefruit diet, at least you have provided essential vitamin C to your diet.
