How Does a Money Gram Work?

Money Gram is an international company that lets you transfer money to family and friends abroad and locally. This company has agents in the state to provide quick and easy customer service. Money Grams can be found at chain stores, grocery stores, drug stores and other customer service stores.

Transferring Money

The process is similar to the concept of a postal money order. It is risky to send cash through the mail or delivery service because it can be easily stolen and difficult to recover. Sending a check is better than cash, but there is no guarantee that the check will not bounce. When you send a money gram the money is prepaid and the receiver is certain to get the correct amount. There is no money sent through the mail because the sender prepays beforehand in cash at a branch office. The receiver can collect their money at the destination branch you have chosen. This process is documented from each end, along with an identification number, which documents each transaction. The sender will have a copy of this number, in order to track down the transaction and the receiver will receive a receipt. Both the receiver and the sender must present a photo ID at the time of the transaction before any money is dispensed.

Receiving and Sending Money

The sender must bring the money that is to be sent and a valid ID usually a driver’s license to a local Money Gram service. The sender will fill out the form with his information and the information of the intended receiver.  The sender will give some money to the clerk and will pay a fee for the amount that was sent. The sender will get a receipt, which contains the reference number. Next, the sender should call and let the receiver know that the money was sent and gives them the reference number, so the receiver can claim his money. The receiver will then go to the nearest money gram branch and percent a driver’s license and reference number to receive their money.
