How Does a Radiologist Spend the Workday?
A radiologist is someone who can take and interpret a variety of scans including CT scans, mammograms, x-rays, ultrasounds and MRIs. Radiologists are essential to the proper care and treatment of many patients. Doctors of many fields rely on the readings of a radiologist to help diagnosis and treat patients. A day in the life of a radiologist is busy and rewarding.
After completing at least two years of training from an accredited school, graduates are able to become registered technologists, who work with basic diagnostic film. With some additional training and experience, registered technologists can earn a Bachelor’s degree in the field of radiology. This field can continue into many specialties, depending on the desires of the radiologist.
Many radiologists begin their day at seven o’clock in the morning. The first part of a full work day may consist of performing administrative tasks such as evaluating requests, providing epidural steroid injections and assisting technologist with additional scans. It is the job of the radiologist to interpret the scans, ultrasounds, chest x-rays, mammograms and other imaging. A good radiologist will help train registered technologists to take the best pictures so that a proper diagnosis can be made.
Radiologists will spend the day interacting with other technologists, patients, health care administration, nurses and doctors to provide the best healthcare for the patients of a hospital, doctor’s office or other healthcare facility. Some radiologist may even provide therapy for a few patients. Radiologists usually work during the week; however, he or she may be on-call for emergency rooms and hospitals. Many people rely on the knowledge and skills of a radiologist to properly diagnose a disease or injury.
