How Does a Veterinarian Spend Their Work Day?
You take your pet to your veterinarian regularly, but have you ever thought about how they spend their days? While you are there, your pet of course, is the most important patient to the doctor. However, veterinarians see many animals each day, perform surgeries, and tend to many emergency situations as well as many other important functions.
Your Veterinarian – Long Hours
The first thing you should know about veterinarians is that they work long hours. Those that share practices with other doctors often have to rotate working on-call. This means if an emergency arises in the middle of the night or on the weekend, they have to respond, similar to what a medical doctor does when on-call.
Morning Hours at the Clinic
Overnight many animal clinics admit emergency cases that do not require immediate veterinarian attention and can wait until the next morning. A veterinarian will normally see any animals that came in overnight first to attempt to determine what is wrong. They will perform a thorough exam and perhaps order x-rays depending what he or she expects is wrong.
Morning throughout End of Day
Surgeries are typically scheduled for the morning hours, but it depends on the veterinarian and the clinic. These can range from routine operations such as neutering and spaying to more complicated procedures. In between surgeries, the veterinarian often sees clients that have appointments and make diagnoses and prescribe medication if needed.
In the afternoons until the close of the clinic, the veterinarian will continue seeing patients, some routine, and some more complex. When the clinic closes, he or she may have other duties that need to be performed before calling it a day. The love of animals and working with people are two prerequisites of being a successful veterinarian.
