How to Apply to Virtual Assistant Jobs

How Does a Virtual Assistant Spend a Workday?

The work of a virtual assistant is similar to a secretary. However, virtual assistants work remotely or virtually, generally from a home office. They may work full-time for one client or part-time for three or four companies. Most companies that hire virtual assistants do so to save money because it is usually cheaper than having an on-site secretary or receptionist.

The Workday

Some virtual assistants work a standard shift or a slight variant, five days a week. They may work as a receptionist, answering phone calls. Much of their work is sent to and from the main office electronically. Virtual assistants may work weekends and holidays, depending on workload. Many virtual assistants are hired by task and can work on their own schedule. They may work weekends and holidays or take time off during the day and then work in the evenings, making this an ideal profession for mothers of young children.

How the Day is Spent

A virtual assistant spends her day much like any other secretary. Typing and proofreading correspondence is a major part of her duties. She may also answer the phone (generally through a VOIP system or a phone forwarder), do data entry or manage a database and work on the company's website. Because she works away from the office, she is not involved in filing tasks or office management. Virtual assistants often manage calendars, send emails and do mailings. They may make travel arrangements or moderate corporate forums. Desktop publishing is common to this job. Some virtual assistants offer translation services. It is possible for a virtual assistant to specialize in a specific area, such as legal services or virtual receptionist.
