How Does an Outlet Store Afford to Sell Items Cheaply?

Outlet stores can be a great place to find items cheaply. They are able to sell items at a discount by obtaining overstock, imperfect items or leftovers from a past season. Outlet stores are usually located in large outlet malls located outside the city limits. Having the location in a less populated area allows the store to save money on rent and those savings get passed on to the customer.

Lower Expenses: One reason outlet stores can afford to sell items cheaply is because they have lower expenses than high-end department stores. You almost never see outlet stores in your local shopping mall; they're usually in an out-of-the-way strip mall that rents spaces for less. Outlet stores also don't have very expensive furnishings and decor. This savings is passed on to the buyer. Outlet stores also don't spend as much on payroll as high-end department stores do; they may only pay according to the cost of living of the area they're located in. Since the area is usually not very expensive, the cost of living is lower. The store can then also pass on those savings to the buyer.

Outlet Store Return Policies, Services and Packaging: In addition to keeping their expenses low, there are other steps outlet stores take to keep their prices low. Outlet stores usually don't have as generous a return policy as most department stores. The window of time that you have to return items may be far less or the sale may be final. Outlet stores can therefore reduce the amount of money spent on credit card processing fees, as well as chargebacks and service charges.

Outlets also save money by offering less in the way of additional services. If you buy a sofa at an outlet store, for example, you'll more than likely be expected to provide your own way of transporting it back to your home. Most outlets don't offer shipping services.  Also, outlets usually use plain paper or plastic bags and plastic hangers, rather than bags or boxes with their store logo on them.
