How Many Players Are on a Baseball Team?

If you are a casual fan of baseball, you might wonder how many players are on a baseball team at any given time.  Keeping track of the number of players can be confusing at times.  Coaches often send in substitutions, pinch runners and pinch hitters.  Take into consideration the players that are on the disabled list, and you might just wonder how many players your favorite team truly has.

A major league baseball team has 40 active players at any given time.  Of those 40 players, only 25 are on the active rotation.  The remaining 15 are often assigned to the team's minor league affiliates.  At any time, a player who is currently playing for a minor league team can be "called up" to take the place of a player on an MLB team.

In September, as the post-season and championship games approach, the active roster increases to 40.  At this time, all 40 team members are part of the MLB team's rotation and have a chance to play at the major league level.

Minor league baseball teams have a similar number of players.  They typically maintain a 40-man roster, with 25 active players.  The remaining 15 are often on the disabled list or playing in another level of the minor leagues (normally at the AAA or AA level).

High school teams and baseball clubs do not have formal regulations in terms of the number of players on their teams.  For rotation purposes, these types of teams typically have a 25 member roster, though at times the number of team members can fluctuate.

Major league, minor league, high school and club teams have a similar team structure when it comes to active players during a game.  Before each game, the manager or coach fills out a line-up card, which lists the nine players who are filling the field positions for the game.  These positions include the pitcher, catcher, four infielders and three outfielders.  The remaining players typically consist of back-up pitchers, relief pitchers, back-up catchers and back-up fielders.
