How Much Money Auto Body Shop Mechanics Make?

Auto body shops make a lot of money when dealing with car restoration and insurance repairs.  When you need a body shop, make sure you have all of your price information in order including how much your insurance is willing to pay.  Body shops make a lot of money if the business is trustworthy and efficient.  The overall profit margin and mechanic pay is based on many factors.



A body shop is responsible for all repair of any body work to the vehicle. Body work includes repairing dents, cracks, scratches and major damage to the outside of the vehicle. This process can be very costly to the consumer based on the car make and model along with the work involved.


If the shop owner is doing a good business with two or three employees, the owner can have low overhead cost as each employee can perform a specific job, making each job a group effort.


If an insurance company is involved, repairs can be extremely costly.  Most auto repair shops make money through good advertisement and high end work.  Mechanics make $13.00 - $15.00 per hour; and some can make as high as $63,000 per year with expertise in luxury car repair. 


Naturally, the shop owner will receive a large percentage of the business, making the mechanic a key operator in the shop.  Another factor in whether are not the shop is making money is trust, most shop owner's and mechanics must build a base of trust to have returning business.  So do your research, speak with other clients and find out about the shop before you have major auto repair work done.
