How To Add Chemicals to Your Swimming Pool

How To Add Chemicals to an Intex Metal Frame Pool

Intex manufactures above ground, round metal frame pools.  These structures are made of high quality steel that has been coated to resist rust.  The easy to assemble design requires no additional tools.  Each joint or beam quickly snaps or pins into place.  Once assembled, Intex metal frame pools can be maintained like any other pool.

Adding the proper amount and kind of chemicals to your pool is important for maintaining the water quality and preventing fading.

  1. Purchase the appropriate chemicals; chlorine, acid, algaecide, soda ash and a water tester kit.  These are available from discount stores or pool retail stores.

  2. Thoroughly read the manufacturer's instructions and warnings before beginning.

  3. Wear gloves and glasses to protect your hands and eyes.

  4. If this is the first time you are adding chemicals to the pool, consult a chemicals chart to determine the proper amount of each chemical for the volume of water in the pool.  These charts are available from pool retailers, online and they are usually included with the manufacturer's documentation for the new pool.

  5. If you are adding chemicals to an established pool, you will need to test the water using a test kit.  Use the test results to determine how much of each chemical you need to add to the water.  Not all chemicals will be necessary at each treatment.

  6. Add liquid chlorine by slowly pouring it into the water as you walk the edge of the pool.  This helps distribute the chemical.  For dry chlorine products, place tablets, granules or powder in a floating dispenser in the pool.

  7. Add acid to the pool by diluting it in a clean plastic bucket according to the manufacturer's instructions.  Add the diluted acid to the pool by slowly pouring it into the water as you walk the edge of the pool.

  8. Add soda ash to the pool by diluting it in a clean plastic bucket according to the manufacturer's instructions.  Add to the pool by slowly pouring it into the water as you walk the edge of the pool.

Safety and Convenience Tips for Handling Pool Chemicals:

  • Always carefully read the manufacturer's instructions.

  • Only use clean, dry non-metallic utensils.

  • Rinse buckets after each use.

  • Never add water to chemicals; always add the chemicals to the pool water.

  • Add chemicals separately; do not combine the chemicals and all them all together.

  • Wear gloves and wash any residue from your skin immediately.

  • Never add dry chemicals by broadcasting them across the surface of the water.  They need to be dissolved to properly distribute in the water.

  • Do not inhale pool chemicals.

  • Do not combine left over chemicals with a new container of chemicals.

  • Replace chemicals yearly.

  • Never allow children access to chemicals.
