How To Become a Great Artist
Becoming a great artist takes not only skill, but learning. As a young artist you will need to not get discouraged when rejected, you will need to understand the importance of observation, and detail. Mastering these skills is the best way to become a great artist.
Growing as a visual artist requires patience, and dedication. Practicing your craft is the only way to truly improve. There are seven simple steps to help aid you in becoming a better visual artist.
- Observation: As an artist you will need to pay full attention to details, and what is around you. Focus on the object, and surround that object. Before creating a piece of art you should research, and observe it in order to produce quality work.
- Accept Criticism: When creating any form of art you will come across constructive criticism. This is not meant to be taken personally, but should be seen as a way to improve your work. No great artist became one without learning how to improve. Be open to criticism even if it is not constructive.
- Practice: The best advice any artist can receive is to practice. As time goes by, major differences will be seen in the work. The improvements will vary by how often the artist practices. Don't expect to create a masterpiece each time. Even simply writing down ideas, drawing doodles, or collecting objects that inspire you will aid in the process.
- Draw From Experiences Collect objects that inspire you throughout the day. This can simply be taking pictures of anything you see, or collecting leaves. Allow yourself to be inspired by what is around you daily.
- Keep a Positive Attitude: Despite criticism and rejection it is important to keep a positive attitude. Do not get discouraged if work does not turn out perfect, or if someone does not care for your work. Learn to accept mistakes, move on, and improve.
- Details: Less may be more, but adding small detail only adds to your work. Learn to add depth and complexity without distracting from the message you are trying to convey. Add detail to the most significant part of the image, to draw an audience's eyes to it.
- Know When to Stop: As a visual artist you will often become mentally and physically exhausted. At that time you will need to relax, and back away from the project to clear your mind.
