How To Become a Jewelry Appraiser

Becoming a jewelry appraiser is a great and financially rewarding career.  You have to put in the effort required to become professionally certified.  There are four steps that you will need in order to be trained properly.  Those steps are experience in the field, certification, knowledge of appraisal laws, and most importantly, integrity.

Things you will need to be a jewelry appraiser:

  • Professional jewelry appraisal certification

  1. Take classes that will lead to Graduate Gemologist of Fellow of the Gemological Association certification.  The Gemological Institute of America gives out the GG designation and the Gemological Association of Great Britain gives out the FGA.  Both certifications are recognized all over the world.

  2. Finish you GG of FGA classwork.  You can’t become an appraiser of jewels and gems if you aren’t certified in one of the two.

  3. Seek employment in a retail jewelry store.  Learn as much as you can regarding the different types of gems, jewels, and precious metals.  These are used to make fine jewelry and you can learn a lot from being around them.   Be sure to also learn about the key figures in the jewelry world, both past and present.

  4. Receive a formal education regarding appraisal from an organization that will lead to AM, ASA, MGA, ISA, CAPP, CMA, CCA, or RMV certifications.  It is a requirement to be certified in appraising and gemology.

  5. Seek out job opportunities with jewelry and gem retailers, estate auction houses, banks, and museums.  Or you can pursue being an independent appraiser.  However, you must complete all the required training and proper certifications.  Whenever entering the professional world, it is essential to have tremendous knowledge of how to protect legal rights.
