How To Build Plywood Storage Shelves

It's a fact that most homes just don't have adequate storage space. If your home is one of these, building plywood storage shelves is an excellent solution to this problem. Building plywood shelves adds the space you need for extra storage in a very economical way.

What You'll Need:

  • (9) 3/4 inch plywood that is 4 ft tall x 2ft wide

  • (1) 3/4 inch plywood that is 8ft tall x 4ft wide

  • (2) 3/4 inch plywood that is 8ft tall x 2ft wide

  • Measuring tape

  • Pencil

  • Carpenter's square

  • Drill with screwdriver bit

  • Wood screws

  1. Construct a rectangle frame using the two 8 ft tall x 2 ft wide pieces of plywood as well as the two 4 ft tall x 2 ft wide pieces. The top edges should be even with the piece used for the top. The bottom piece of plywood should be offset by an inch from both the bottom edge and the side. Ensure that all the angles are square and then begin screwing the frame together.

  2. Use your measuring tape to measure 1 foot from the bottom shelf to the top shelf and create a mark. This mark will be the bottom of your second shelf. Next, place a 4 ft x 2 ft piece of plywood at the exact location of the mark. Ensure that it is square and then begin screwing it into place.

  3. Continue the process of measuring up 1 foot from the previous shelf to determine the exact location of the next shelf.

  4. Attach the shelves to the frame of the storage system by using screws. Continue this process until all the shelves have been set with around 1 foot of distance between them. Keep in mind the last shelf will only be around 4 inches away from the top.

  5.  Take the remaining piece of 8 ft by 4 ft and place a 1/2-inch piece of plywood over the open portion of the frame. This will serve as the back of the cabinet. Ensure that it is even and then plumb it on all sides and screw it into place to complete construction.
