How To Build a Cheap Storage Shed

Storage sheds are frequently used by individuals that have more items that they can store in their homes. Homeowners often choose to build storage sheds as a cheap way to increase their storage space when the attic, closets, and garages are simply not enough.

  1. Find a suitable location for your storage shed. The location should be easily accessible, and free of any major obstacles, such as large trees or embedded rocks.

  2. Prepare the foundation for your storage shed. Use whatever excavating tools that are necessary to create a level surface. It is highly advisable that you remove any roots or other plant life that could harm the shed's foundation in the future. Lay the foundation by placing concrete blocks across the area. The blocks should be no more than 4 feet apart in every direction to ensure a solid foundation.

  3. Place solid posts at each corner of the future shed. The posts should be placed at least 3 to 4 feet into the ground. Concrete can be poured around the post to ensure that they are very solid, or you can save the expense by tamping gravel and dirt around the posts.

  4. Construct the framing for the floor and walls with two-by-four boards. Use 3 to 4 inch screws to anchor the boards together. Leave enough space for an entrance between two sections of the framing.

  5. Place the floor framing on the foundation and secure it to each corner post. Cover the framing with sheets of 1/2-1 inch plywood.

  6. Raise the wall-framing by anchoring it to the floor and corner posts. Proceed by connecting a horizontal beam to the walls using rafters and rafter brackets. The beam should be elevated 2 to 4 feet above the walls.

  7. Cover the rafters with more sheets of plywood. Nail shingles to the plywood to finish the roof.
