How To Build a Seat for Your Windows With Storage
Window seats are both an excellent cosmetic addition as well as excellent storage option for any space. In addition to its storage benefits, a window seat is an excellent space to lounge and read your favorite book. Construing a window seat is a fairly simple process with lasting benefits.
What You'll Need:
- Electric screwdriver
- Hand saw
- Wood glue
- Sand paper
- Marking utensil
- Measuring tape
- Wood (the amount will vary depending on the size of your seat)
- Two hinges
- Latch
- Chose an area where you would like to construct your window seat. Consider an area that is less cluttered and will accommodate a relaxing space. Use your measuring tape to measure the height between the window and the floor as well as the width of the window. You'll need these measurements to determine the size of your window seat.
- Visit your local hardware store to purchase wood according to your measurements. You will need at least five pieces of wood. The first piece of wood will be used as the front part of the window seat. This piece should fit the entire length of the window's bottom. The smallest two pieces are the sides of the window seats. The next piece will be used as a lid for your storage space. The final piece will also be used for the bottom of the window seat.
- Mark your measurements on the wall. If your space has molding where the wall meets the floor, use your hand saw to cut off the section of molding where the window seat can be securely placed.
- Screw the two sides pieces of the wood along the bottom piece of wood. Use your screwdriver to attach the bottom piece into the bottom of the other two.
- Next, screw the front piece of wood to the front edge of the bottom piece of wood. You'll need to overlap the pieces of wood. Next, use a screwdriver to secure the front piece to the two side pieces.
- With the last piece of wood, starting at the edge of the wood, use a saw to cut an exact square. Ensure that the square is large enough for the arms of an adult to easily be able to reach in and out of. Be sure to leave enough wood on both the sides and back of the square.
- Secure the hinges to the back part of the open square in the window seat's top by using your screwdriver. Connect the rest of the hinge parts to the wooden square you previously cut out. Next, attach the square back to the upper part of the window seat. If installed correctly, it should resemble a dog door.
- Install the window seat box securely against the wall under the window. Make any necessary adjustments to ensure the unit is secure.
- Add a window seat cushion to complete the look and add comfort to the window seat.
