How To Choose the Right Eye Shadow

Eye shadow can add depth and definition to a woman's eyes.  Depending on it's application, eye shadow can make your eyes appear larger, smaller, set closer together or set farther apart.  In order to create the perfect look, a woman must know how to choose the right eye shadow color and shade and learn how to apply it properly.

  1. Choose the type of shadow you want to use.  There are many options when you are shopping for eye shadow.  Decide whether you want to use a powder shadow, liquid shadow or eye shadow pencil.  Powder shadows are the easiest to apply.  All you need is a simple cotton-tipped shadow brush.  Liquid shadows can be a bit more tricky, and come with their own special applicator.  They require more skill to apply properly.  Eye shadow pencils are a great option to keep in your purse and can be easy to apply.  You should avoid drawing directly on your eyelid, but rather apply the pencil to your finger and use your finger to apply the shadow to your eyelid.

  2. Choose your finish.  There are many different options available, so it is a matter of personal preference.  Eyeshadows range from matte finish, to shiny pearl finish, to a sheer highlighting finish.  Decide what look you want to create and choose the finish that best compliments your look.

  3. Consider your eye color when choosing your shadow.  The best way to choose the appropriate eye shadow color is to begin by analyzing your own eye color.  There are different eye shadow colors and shades that compliment the many colors of a woman's eye.

  • Blue Eyes:  Choose a color such as taupe, gray, purple, violet and deep blue for a neutral, refined look.  If you seek a bold and funky look, choose a brighter shadow such as turquoise, fuchsia or silver.

  • Green or Hazel Eyes:  There are many colors that compliment hazel and green eyes.  Such colors as brown, forest green, purple, plum and apricot will create a beautiful day-to-day look.  You can experiment with brighter colors such as light green, lime green, gold or bright purple.

  • Brown Eyes:  Beige, copper, champagne and forest green are great colors to complement brown eyes.  To create a youthful, funky look, there are many different colors you can experiment with, such as tangerine, hot pink and royal blue.

  • Any Eye Color:  Navy, shades of charcoal and silver and powder blue.
