How To Clean Dentures
Wearing dentures helps you to eat, speak and have a white smile. Like your original teeth, they must be cleaned routinely to prevent stains and odors from forming. For people who are unaccustomed to wearing dentures, it is important to learn the correct way to do this to avoid damaging them.
What You'll Need:
- Towels
- Soft-bristled toothbrush
- Mild soap, dishwashing liquid or denture cleaner
- Glass
- Denture-soaking solution
Instructions
- Remove your dentures from your mouth prior to cleaning.
- Place a folded towel on the sink where you'll be cleaning your dentures. This will provide a cushion for them in the event that they should fall.
- Rinse them under running water to clean them between meals. This will remove any food or debris that may be sticking to them.
- Wet a soft bristled brush and run it over the surface of yur dentures. Apply a small amount of mild soap or dishwashing liquid to the toothbrush and gently brush them. If you prefer, purchase a cleaner made specifically for dentures.
- Pour water into a glass to soak the dentures overnight. If there are stains, use a denture soaking solution. This will also help them to retain their shape.
- Rinse them thoroughly before returning them to your mouth.
Warning
- Toothpastes are too abrasive for dentures and may damage them.
- Avoid using any form of bleach on your dentures. They can lighten the pink gum area. In addition, chlorine can tarnish any metal parts.
- Avoid cleaning your dentures by using boiling water or by putting them in the microwave or dishwasher. This will warp and damage them.
