How To Disable OnStar GPS

OnStar is a global positioning device that is built in to most new model GMC vehicles. This GPS tracking system is marketed for safety reasons for the average driver. You can call the people at OnStar if you are lost and they can help you find your way, or if you are involved in an accident OnStar will be alerted immediately and emergency personnel will be given the location of your vehicle.

  1. Open your trunk and remove the protective cover that is holding your spare tire in place. There is usually a single bolt that holds this plate in place. You should be able to easily remove this bolt with your fingers by twisting the bolt counter clockwise direction.

  2. Remove the cover and the spare tire from your trunk and set aside in a safe place until you are done.

  3. Remove the plastic plate that is behind the tire storage area.

  4. Pull back the fabric cover on the right side of the spare tire panel to reveal the OnStar brain box. You can easily locate this box. It will be a solid black box that has one or two wires running from it towards the front of the car.

  5. Disconnect the signal cables that are attached to the OnStar brain box with a standard screwdriver and set aside.

  6. Tape off the ends of this signal wires with electrical tape since you are not going to be using the OnStar feature.

  7. Inspect your OnStar brain box to determine what you need to remove the box. Most boxes are attached with multiple screws that hold it in place.

  8. Remove the screws that are holding the OnStar box in place, and then lift the box out of your car.

  9. Replace the plastic plate and pull the fabric interior back into place.

  10. Put your spare tire back into its spot and replace the protective cover.

  11. Add the bolt that you removed earlier and tighten it down into place to secure the cover that holds your spare tire in place. Your OnStar system is now disabled and your car is unable to be tracked by their global positioning service.
