How To Draw Hot Rod Flames

Drawing hot rod flames is considered moderately challenging because of the difficulty in achieving not only the correct teardrop shape, but also getting the flames just right for a truly professional flame.  It might be a good idea to ask for an artist's advice.  But if you have a steady hand and are patient, you can get awesome results.

Begin by perusing muscle car and hot rod magazines, studying designs for inspiration and technique.   Flames and pinstripes are classic designs in the world of hot rods.

It takes many hours of practice before you will be ready to actually add flames to a painted surface, but it is very rewarding once you have mastered the craft.

  1. Using clean paper and a permanent marker, practice on a clean, smooth surface. Start by practicing straight lines, applying various amounts of pressure to thicken or thin the line.  You’ll want to repeat until you can draw a long straight line controlling the width by the amount of pressure you apply to the marker.

  2. Start over, but this time make curved lines. Again, practice controlling the width of the lines by the amount of pressure you put on the marker. Mastering the teardrop shape is a crucial element in the art of drawing flames. You will also want to practice keeping your flames approximately the same width, but will want to vary the height. Don’t overdo the design because it makes the art look cluttered.

  3. Using a clean sheet of paper, draw a line down the center to serve as the center line design, then another line to the side of the center line. This second line will serve as the base line and can be curved or straight.  Draw an identical line on the other side of the center line. Create your design off of your baseline, one line at a time, doing your best to preserve symmetry.  Try to keep your spacing identical.
