How To Dreadlock Your Hair Without Products

Dreadlocks originated in African and became a popular trend with many Jamaicans; however, nowadays dreadlocks are non-gender specific and do not have any ethnic barriers. A majority of people use specific hair products to create the look, although it is possible to put your hair into dreadlocks without any products.

Supply List

  • Crochet hook

  • Shampoo

  • Rat-tail comb

  • Comb (preferably metal)

  • Elastic hair bands

  • Blow dryer

  1. Wash your hair using your regular shampoo. Blow dry your hair until there is not any moisture present. If you do not like to blow dry your hair, you may allow it to dry naturally.

  2. Section your hair into portions tying each section back with an elastic hair band. Use a rat-tail comb for the best results. Create a pattern with the portions or scatter them throughout your head. This is a personal choice and neither method is preferred over the other.

  3. Remove the elastic bands on the back of the head first. Do so by removing one at a time and working on that portion.

  4. Braid each section of hair as you remove the bands. Make sure you braid to the end of the hair and tie the band back on the hair as soon as you braid it. Place an elastic band near the roots, as well.

  5. Finish braiding every portion of hair until your entire head of hair is in braids.

  6. Leave your hair in the braids for about two weeks. Wash your hair as you regularly do. You should not use conditioner on your hair throughout this duration of time.

  7. Take the elastic bands out of your hair one at a time. Use a metal comb to backcomb each portion of hair. The end result should be hair that is fluffy and full.

  8. Backcomb each dreadlock until you have done each section of hair twice and each dreadlock is tight. Rub the roots of each section in a counterclockwise motion to make the roots tight into the rest of the dreadlock. Retie both the root and the bottom of each section of hair.
