How To Find an Employment Lawyer

If an employee has been wronged by his employer, it is important that the employee has proper representation. Employers almost always have a legal staff, and an employee should have the same opportunity. However, finding a lawyer is an important decision that should not be taken lightly.

  1. Before looking for an employment lawyer, remind yourself that you will not be persuaded to choose a lawyer based solely on an advertising campaign. Many lawyers have sharp presentations on television and in print, but these ads cannot show how competent the lawyer is in court.

  2. Go online and find several lawyers in your area. Check a website like MerchantCircle to find the contact information for these lawyers. Ask friends and family if they have heard of any of the lawyers or if they have personally used them. Ask if they would recommend any of them.

  3. Narrow down your search to two or three lawyers and make appointments to visit their offices. Remember than any reputable lawyer will give you a free consultation to look over your case, even if this consultation lasts half an hour.

  4. During the consultation, discuss with the lawyer their potential plan for litigation. Make sure that you find out what fees they charge. Usually you will only have to pay a lawyer in the event that you win your case.

  5. After spending time with each lawyer, make a decision on who you will hire. Remember, you may have a short period of time to make this decision, because your claim may have a time limit in the state that you live.
