How To Get Off an Auto Title

If you are listed as the owner on a car title, yet do not own the vehicle any longer, you will want to remove your name from the car title. Often there can be more than one name listed on a title, especially in the case of a cosigner. Once the car is paid off, you probably do not want your name on the car title anymore. Do not worry you can easily remove your name from the car title in no time at all.

More Than One Owner

If there are two owners listed on the title, you can easily have your name removed from the title and therefore from any responsibility for the vehicle. Let the other person who is listed as owner of the car title know of your wish to remove your name from the auto title. You two will need to visit your local DMV or currency exchange and let them know what you want done. Simply sign the title in the designated spot as if you were selling the car. Give the title to the clerk, and he or she will do the rest. The other person whose name is remaining on the title will need to apply for a new title and registration that is solely in his or her name.

Sell the Car

If you are the owner of the car then your name will appear on the car title, which makes you responsible for the vehicle as well as any tickets that it incurs. If you are not using the car, you may want to consider selling it to remove your name from the title. You can also give the car to someone as well to remove your name from the title. Locate a buyer or decide who you are going to give the car to, and then visit your local DMV and let them know that you are going to be either selling or giving this car away and then you need to have your name taken off the title. The other person will need to register the car in his or her name and apply for a new title and plates. They will be sent a title in the mail that has your name removed, and the new owners added. After the car is registered at the DMV, you are no longer responsible for the car.
