How To Get Rid of Primer Spots on Car Paint

A few primer spots spoiling your car's nice finish can be aggravating. Unfortunately, using harsh abrasives or chemicals to clean them can easily damage auto paint, resulting in a mess that will require expensive repairs. Using detailing clay, however, is a safe and effective way to remove imperfections, including primer spots, from your car.

What You Will Need

  • Car soap

  • Sponges

  • Towels or rags for drying the car

  • Microfiber cloths

  • Auto detailing clay bar

  • Clay lubricant

  • Car wax or paint sealant

  • Polyfoam wax applicator

Procedure

  1. Park the car in the shade.  Direct sunlight can soften the clear coating on the paint, making it easier to damage during cleaning.

  2. Wash the car with the soap and sponges and then dry it with the rags or towels.

  3. Make sure that the primer spot you want to treat is otherwise very clean. If it is dusty, clean the spot again and dry it before beginning.

  4. Spray the primer spot with clay lubricant. Make sure to use a lubricant designed for use with detailing clay. Other lubricants, such as soap and water, can deteriorate the clay compound.

  5. Rub the clay bar over the primer spot. Use pressure to ensure that you thoroughly remove the spot. You will feel the clay grip the car's surface as you rub. When the clay begins to glide over the previously soiled area, the spot is clean.

  6. Wipe the cleaned area with the microfiber cloth.

  7. Run your fingers over the spot you have cleaned. It should feel very smooth. If it feels rough, repeat steps 3-6.

  8. Use the polyfoam wax applicator to apply a thin, even layer of wax or paint sealant to the affected area.

  9. Allow the product to dry. This should take 15 to 20 minutes.

  10. Test the treated area by running a finger over it. If your finger brushes away dry residue to reveal shiny paint, the product is dry. If your finger leaves a smear, let the wax dry for a few more minutes.

  11. Use a clean microfiber cloth to wipe away the hazy residue from the treated area.

  12. Buff by rubbing the cloth over the spot in a circular motion until the treated area appears clean and shiny.
