How To Keep Moisture From Building Up in Storage Bins

Many people keep some of their prized possessions in storage bins. Storage bins are meant to keep your belongings safe and dry, while protecting their integrity. If, however, your storage bins fall victim to moisture, your precious belongings can be ruined. There are steps you can take to keep moisture from building up in storage bins.

Store in a cool, dry place. Condensation and moisture can build up which will promote the build-up of moisture in your storage bins. By keeping your bins in a cool and dry environment, moisture build-up will be discouraged.

Store your bins up high. In the event of a flood, your storage bins will get wet if they're not stored up high or on blocks. Do not get a false sense of security just because your basement has never flooded. There's always a first time for everything, especially if your power goes out and your sump pump fails. Keep your storage bins on cinder blocks or on top of a high structure such as a table to keep moisture from building up in storage bins.

Pack your storage bins with newspaper. After placing your belongings into storage bins, pack dry newspaper around your items to discourage the build-up of moisture. Newspaper is absorbent, and using it as a packing material will keep your items fresh and dry.

Use charcoal. Place pieces of charcoal in your storage bins to discourage moisture from building up. Charcoal, like newspapers, absorbs not only moisture, but musty odors as well. Commercial moisture absorbing products work just as well as charcoal and can be purchased from any hardware or home improvement store.
