How To Level an Intex Aboveground Pool
Intex pools can provide hours of fun when properly installed, and a big part of installation is making sure the pool is level. Pools that are on an uneven surface are dangerous; the water can become unbalanced making the pool tip or lean to one side. Therefore, it is important before starting your Intex pool installation to make sure there are no problems with the ground.
Supplies
- Sand
- Rake
- Shovel
- Measuring tape
- Level
- 2 x 4's
- 1/4 inch metal rod
- Power drill
- 1/2 inch bit
- Construction plastic
- Yard roller
- Select a spot in your yard that appears level. It is important to choose the flattest and largest area you can find. If the spot is level, less sand will be required when preparing the pool's base.
- Measure the space and be sure the pool will fit. For example, if you are putting up pool 12 feet in diameter, make sure the area is at least 13 feet wide.
- Cover the entire area with a piece of black construction plastic. Secure the plastic sheeting to the ground by using a ground stake. The purpose of the plastic is to kill the grass where the pool will be.
- Use a level mounted to a 2 x4 to find the highest and lowest points in your selected area for your pool. If there is more than two inches in the height difference, topsoil will need to be removed as part of the leveling process. Make sure the 2 x 4 spans the entire length of the pool.
- Use a tape measure to find the center of the 2 x 4. Drill a 1/2 inch hole through the 2 x 4. Lay it on the spot where the pool is going. Mark the center by driving a 1/4 inch steel rod through the center of the hole into the ground. Lift the 2 x 4 off of the rod.
- Pour sand into the area around the rod. It is important that more sand is placed in the low areas. The sand should be at least two inches deep overall.
- Spread the sand out with a rake.
- Now, replace the 2 x 4 back over the stake in the ground. Spin the 2/4 on the stake. This will even out the depth of the sand as the 2 x 4 passes over the spots. Use your shovel and rake to make any necessary sand adjustments.
- Use your garden hose to wet the sand down, making it compact.
- Rent a yard roller from a local home improvement store. Use the roller to compact the wet sand into a tight base for your pool.
