How To Make Cheap Christmas Gifts

Giving Christmas gifts are a part of everybody's to-do list once the holiday comes around.  Some families have many people to buy for.  Learning how to make cheap Christmas gifts can help you afford to give nice gifts to everyone you care about. The following gift-giving ideas are great to receive from children, baby sitters, the broke college student or those on a strict budget.

Reindeer Sweatshirt

This is a cute idea for children of preschool age.

Materials needed:

  • A child’s white sweatshirt in the appropriate size

  • Fabric paint in brown, black and red

  • 2 small, pre-made fabric red bows

  • Needle and thread

Instructions:

  1. Paint an oval in the middle of the sweatshirt using the brown fabric paint.  This will be the reindeer head.

  2. Draw eyes on the reindeer head with the black paint and add a circular nose at the tip of the oval with the red paint.

  3. Add the antlers to each side of the reindeer head.  This is the handprint of the child receiving the shirt.  This is done by spreading brown fabric paint all over the child’s outstretched hand.  Once completely covered with paint, place the hand onto the shirt on one side of the oval and press down hard.  Slowly lift the hand off of the shirt and immediately wash it.

  4. Repeat with the other hand for the opposite side of the reindeer’s head.

  5. Apply the words "Merry Christmas" below the reindeer head with red paint.

  6. Allow the shirt to dry overnight.

  7. Sew the bows onto the antlers

Fleece Scarves

This is a great gift for both children and adults and it is easy enough for a child to make.

Materials needed:

  • Fleece in various patterns and colors

  • Scissors

  • Straight pins

  • Old scarf to be used as a pattern for length

Instructions:

  1. Stretch the fleece out on a flat table.

  2. Lay the old scarf on top of the fleece, lining it up along the edge of the material.

  3. Use the straight pins to pin the scarf to the fleece.

  4. Cut around the scarf creating a new scarf out of the fleece once pinned.  When cutting the scarf, extend it six inches longer than the pattern scarf. This is for creating the fringe.

  5. Remove the pattern scarf and set aside.

  6. Fringe the fleece scarf by cutting 3 inch fringes on both sides.
