How To Make Clothing Patterns

Many families are saving money every way they can think of and some are turning to making their own clothes as one way to save. How to make clothing patterns is the first step in creating one-of-a-kind pieces to update a wardrobe without having to take out a loan or break the budget.

People wonder how to make clothing patterns because they want to save money on their clothes purchases. With a few simple steps, it is easy to make clothing patterns for yourself and everyone in the family.

  1. A pullover shirt and pants is an easy outfit to start pattern making.

  2. The easiest way to make custom clothing patterns is to create them from an outfit that fits you best right now.

  3. Look in your closet for an outfit you are comfortable wearing and that fits you perfectly. Chose a pullover shirt and pants, preferably ones without a zipper.

  4. Lay a sheet of tissue paper, newspaper or pattern paper on a flat surface.

  5. Place the shirt on top of the paper and smooth it out.

  6. Create a 'guideline' for the pattern by measuring a half-inch around the garment, marking every few inches along the way. When you remove the shirt, you will have a 'dotted line' pattern.

  7. Connect the dots for the shirt pattern, which will include a half-inch seam allowance. You may have to measure and make a separate pattern for the collar.

  8. Follow the same instructions for the pants, only with the pants, there will be four pieces, a front and back for each leg.
