How To Make Handprint Jewelry
Jewelry with a small handprint or footprint is a collection that you can cherish for life. If your baby’s hand or foot is too big for the jewelry, you can send a copy to a jewelry professional who can create a handmade piece for you. If you want to make your own, you will need to purchase some supplies.
- Gather the needed supplies including polymer clay, small dowel, wax paper, cutting tool, pliers and steel powder.
- Roll the clay into a small ball. The ball should be approximately 1 to 2 inches tall and wide.
- Put the ball on the wax paper.
- Flatten the clay using the dowel rod. Make sure the thickness is even throughout the clay.
- Press a finger, hand or foot gently on the clay.
- Remove and observe the print. If you like it, continue. If you want to redo it, simply roll the clay into a ball and begin again.
- Cut the clay into the desired shape. You can use small cookie cutters or knife.
- Put a small hole on the top. This is where you will attach it to a chain or bracelet.
- Unfold a coat of metal or steel powder on each side.
- Bake the piece of jewelry in your oven according to the instructions on the clay package. Clay varies and may require higher or lower temperatures and times.
- Glaze the jewelry once it has cooled. Allow the glaze at least two hours to dry.
- Attach a circular ring into the hole at the top of the jewelry and fasten it to a necklace or charm bracelet.
