How To Make Safety Pin Jewelry
Accessorizing your outfit with safety pin jewelry is a great way to add a bit of punk-rock flare to any ensemble. Safety pin jewelry is becoming increasingly popular. It can be created for very little out-of-pocket cost by using simple supplies that can be purchased at your local craft store. Use a little creativity and create some new accessories.
- Obtain the right string. In order to create safety pin jewelry, you will need a stretchy elastic string with a small diameter. It must be thin enough to fit through the hole of a safety pin, so choose your string carefully. Measure your wrist and add a bit of length to account for the bulk of the safety pins. Cut two strings of equal length.
- Decide what pins you want to use. Basic silver safety pins will work just fine, but you might want to add a bit of flare to your design. Browse through your local craft store. You will likely find safety pins of every size and color that you can use to create your jewelry. Using different colors and sizes can help you make a very unique piece of jewelry. Remember that you will need to adjust your string length accordingly.
- Choose your beads. Size is key when you are choosing your beads. The beads must be small enough to fit inside a closed safety pin, yet the hole in the bead must be large enough to fit over the needle of the safety pin. A safe choice to begin is a medium-sized bead. These generally are the appropriate size. Each safety pin will hold approximately three medium-sized beads, so be sure to purchase enough beads to cover your creation.
- Design and string your bracelet. Configure your colors, sizes and pattern. Place the beads on all of the safety pins that you decide to use. Once you have beaded all of your pins, you are ready to begin stringing your jewelry. Use a clip to secure both pieces of elastic together at one end. A clothespin, small chip clip or other clasp will work for this purpose. One at a time, begin stringing your pins. Place one string through the loop in the bottom of the pin, and the other through the hole in the fastener at the top. Alternate your pins top to bottom so that they lie flush together. Once you have reached your desired length, knot your jewelry by tying each string to it's own end. You can secure your knots by using a drop of super glue if you would like. Slide a pin over your knots to hide them and create a finished look.
