How To Paint Auto Wheels
You can really change the look of your car by changing the look of the wheels. Maybe you want your tires to match the color of your car or maybe the tire is just looking tired, damaged or worn. Regardless of the reason, you can change the style of the car by painting the wheels, giving them a real polished look.
- Clean the wheels thoroughly, scrubbing with soap and water, making sure to get into crevices and removing debris. Use a hose to rinse the wheels. The cleaner they are, the better the result.
- Sand your wheels with 120 to 320-grit sandpaper to remove the current finish. If your tires are made of chrome, sand until you get below the surface of the chrome.
- Use a 600-grit sandpaper to remove final debris. Wash off all left over debris. Use a hose and rinse off.
- Tape the outside of the wheel by placing tape on the tire. It will block the paint from splattering onto the tire and protect the vehicle paint as well.
- Wear a mask to avoid inhaling fumes. Lay the wheel on a flat surface and spray two to three coats of primer to the wheel. Allow the primer to dry.
- Spray two to three coats of the paint of your choice. Allow the paint to dry for at least 24 hours.
- Apply a clear coat twice and allow it to dry overnight.
