Painting your car's parts is a great way to give old or discolored parts a new lease on life. Your car will stand out from the rest with custom painted auto parts.
Items needed:
- Newspaper or painter's drop cloth
- Medium grit sandpaper
- Warm water
- Auto primer
- Base coat
- Auto sealer
Instructions:
- Carefully remove the auto part that you wish to paint.
- Lay out newspaper or a painter’s drop cloth to paint your auto parts on.
- Place your auto parts that you are going to paint flat on your newspaper or drop cloth.
- Sand the metal surface of your car's auto parts with medium grit sandpaper to give them a rough finish. Primer does not adhere properly to a smooth auto part that has not been sanded.
- Rinse your auto parts in clean warm water to remove the particles that may be on your auto parts from the sanding process. Dry your auto parts thoroughly.
- Apply a thin coat of auto primer to your sanded auto parts. Do not spray the primer on too thick, it can cause ugly drip marks that have to be sanded off then repainted.
- Allow the primer to dry thoroughly before applying your second thin coat of primer to the auto paints that you are going to paint.
- Allow the second coat of auto primer to dry thoroughly before moving on to the next step. The amount of time this takes depends on the temperature in your garage as well as the humidity level and outside temperature.
- Apply the first coat of your base coat color and then allow the paint to dry.
- Sand the paint's surface slightly to form a rough surface that the second coat of paint will be able to adhere properly.
- Spray on your second coat of your base color and allow the paint to thoroughly dry. This takes around one to three hours.
- Apply your clear auto sealer to the surface of your auto parts in a thin fine coat. You do not want to allow any drips to form on your painted auto parts.
- Sand down the surface of your clear coat with a medium grit sandpaper and dust off any small particles that remain.
- Apply your last coat of clear coat sealant to your auto parts and then allow them to it overnight to allow the many layers of paint to cure fully before replacing the parts into your car.
