How To Paint Interior Car Trim

If you are thinking about painting interior car trim, it is an easy auto upgrade.  It will improve the look of the trim and also give contrast to the upholstery.  This recondition is done with simple tools that follow a very easy process.  The trim may be dirty, or a color that you want to change.  All it takes for a new life is a quick paint job.

Items you will need to paint interior car trim:

  • Dry towel

  • Clean rag

  • Sandpaper that is 200 grit

  • Degreaser

  • Spray paint

  • Surface primer

  • Clear coat (this is optional)

  1. Take the trim piece off the car by pulling it up and off the interior.  The trim pieces don’t need special tools to be removed.  They can be held into place by plastic clips and taken off by hand.

  2. Take the degreaser and a clean rag and remove dirt and grease for the trim piece.  Wipe with a clean towel until its dry.  This will get rid of the degreaser residue.

  3. Sand the surface of the trim piece lightly with 200 grit sandpaper.  This ensures that the paint will adhere efficiently.

  4. Apply a coat of surface primer.  Be sure the entire piece is covered and read the paint label to see how long the primer needs to stay on.

  5. Sand the primer surface in a light manner with the 200 grit sandpaper once the primer has dried.  This will knock down the texture of the paint.  However, if you want the last piece to have a textured surface, don’t do this step.

  6. Apply the last coat of paint.  Be sure to paint the coat back and forth across the trim piece until it’s covered all the way.  You don’t have to worry about applying paint under the trim.  Let it dry for up to eight hours.  After the piece is dry, you can enjoy driving with the improved interior trim.  The interior look of a car is just as important as the exterior.  Following these steps will ensure and excellent looking interior.
