How To Practice Safety Precautions

Regardless of what type of job you face in your day-to-day life, it is important to observe the necessary safety measures outlined for said task in your safety manual. Should you lack the standard safety documentation that accompanies your task or use of specific equipment, there are still a few things you can do to help minimize risk to yourself and others.

  1. Use common sense. If the job you are contemplating undertaking involves the use of heavy equipment or power tools, take a moment to ask yourself what could go wrong. Some answers will come swiftly: you could get hit on the head in a construction zone or your eyes might be damaged by flying sparks or paint. These initial questions will help you determine what initial safety steps to initiate.

  2. Protect yourself. When lacking proper documentation, you should always protect your person with the basic safety gear before undertaking a job. This means wearing eye protection, proper gloves and a hard toed boot.

  3. Wear eye protection. Goggles or standard safety glasses can protect your eyes from flying debris, sparks, paint and misfired sharp objects such as nails, staples or screws. Always make sure you have a pair of safety glasses or goggles on hand before beginning any heavy job.

  4. Use your gloves. The protection of your hands will often rely upon your selection and use of a pair of safety gloves. When working in a high risk area, your hands are subjected to potential injury by air driven nails, screws and staples which can end with a trip to the emergency room if your hands are inadequately protected. Always wear safety gloves when working around heavy machinery or power tools.

  5. Pick the right boots. Heavy duty steel toe boots are a must when working in an environment that includes heavy lifting, moving or assembling pieces of machinery or constructing parts of an overall structure. As with any workplace environment, accidents are known to happen even in the safest environments and the selection and wearing of footwear suitable for your job environment is vital for your safety.
