How To Raise the pH in a Pool

It is essential to keep chemical levels in a pool to a certain level. These levels can vary depending on the pool's type and size, but the levels are set to ensure the safety of the swimmers. Raising the pH in a pool is as simple as adding a pH increaser, but keeping it at the correct level may require more work and consistent attention.

1. Determine if the pH level is too low. Test pH level with a store bought tester. Read the test according to the manufacturer’s directions.

2. Obtain a pH increaser.  Sodium carbonate, also known as Soda Ash, is normally the used chemical. This can be purchased at a pool supply store or any store that sells pool items.

3. Follow instructions. The amount of sodium carbonate needed varies depending on pool capacity. Follow the directions on the pH increaser to achieve the correct and safe results.

4. Note alkalinity. The pH level of a pool is greatly affected by alkalinity. Be sure to test this level as well, or the pH increaser may only work for a short period of time.
