How To Recharge the Air Conditioning in a 2002 Ford Explorer

It is possible to recharge your air conditioner yourself in a Ford Explorer. Make sure that your Ford Explorer is R134 compatible before you decide to recharge. An auto parts store should have a kit that will assist you in finding any leaks in the system. If there is any visible damage then you will want to take your truck to a professional.

Items that you will need to complete the task will be goggles, gloves, a leak detection kit, a pressure gage and R134 refrigerant. There are a few steps to take in order to ensure you complete a successful recharge to your Explorer's air conditioning.

1. Locate the low pressure valve. Generally this valve is located along the firewall of the engine, but can also be found in front of the engine. It will be labeled L or Low, with a blue or black cap. The valve will have a connector that is either a screw-on valve or a quick connect. If the valve is a quick connect then your Ford takes the R134 refrigerant; otherwise it does not.

2. Turn on the engine with the air conditioner on the coldest level possible. This will ensure an accurate pressure reading. Using the pressure gage, check the system's pressure.

3. Attach the R134 hose to the LPS connector. Turn the valve slowly so all of the refrigerant can enter the air conditioner. Make sure you follow the directions on how to hold the can when you are recharging the air conditioner.

4. Remove the refill hose from the connector port and close the valve. Replace the cap on the low pressure connector and leave your Explorer running with the air on for 30 minutes. This will allow the refrigerant to properly circulate throughout the system.
