Materials Needed

  • Screwdriver

  • Water based cleaner

  • Spray bottle

  • Clean cloth

  • Rust inhibitor

  • Clear coat

  1. Look over the car door to find all of the areas that have rusted. You want to make sure you repair everything.

  2. Take the door from the car to make it easier to repair the rust. Place the door on a flat hard surface. Make sure the surface is covered with a blanket to protect it from scratches.

  3. Remove the panel to the door. You can do this by removing the screws with a screwdriver or simply popping the panel from the clips.

  4. Remove the plastic covering from the panel and place it to the side so you will have access to the inside of the door. The holes that are present should give you enough room to work on the door.

  5. Apply water based cleaner in a spray bottle. Spray the door thoroughly with the cleaner. Use a clean cloth to go over the door. Allow the door to dry for one hour.

  6. Spray a coat of rust inhibitor on the door. The inhibitor will keep rust from forming in the future and provide long-term protection to the metal. Allow the inhibitor to dry for one hour.

  7. Spray a thin coat of clear coat to the door. The clear coat will seal the area and add further protection from rust. Allow the clear coat to dry for three hours.
