How To Repair Windshield Wiper Linkage

Windshield wiper linkage in a car joins the wiper motor to the wiper-blade assembly.  When you notice the wiper linkage doesn’t work, your windshield wipers won’t work either.  Most of the time linkage assemblies don’t fail, but if they are damaged or bent, they may move unevenly or even stop working.  When this happens, you will need to repair the wiper-linkage assembly.

Items you will need to repair the windshield wiper linkage:

  • Socket wrench

  • Socket set

Take the windshield wiper arm and pull it up and away from the windshield.  Do this until the wiper arms are locked into a vertical position.

  1. Unbolt the nut keeping the wiper arm to the wiper linkage.  Take a socket wrench and use it.

  2. Take the wiper arm and pull it off the wiper linkage.

  3. Open the hood of the car and find the wiper motor of the vehicle.  They are usually small canister-shaped motors that are attached to the firewall.

  4. Unhook the wiper motor from the firewall and take the motor off the wiper linkage.

  5. Use a socket wrench and unbolt the water linkage from the wiper linkage bracket.

  6. Take off the wiper linkage.

  7. Put in the new wiper linkage.  Installing it is the reverse of removal.

Repairing windshield wiper linkage isn’t a hard process at all, but the key is staying aware of how the windshields are working.  If you notice that the windshield wipers are moving differently, you need to check the problem.  Chances are the wiper linkage needs to be fixed.  You don’t have to let the wipers get to a point where they aren’t working at all.  The quicker you fix the problem the easier it will be to resolve.  If you can’t do it yourself, you can have a professional do the job for you.  However, you can save time and money doing it yourself.  You can even help family and friends if they are having windshield wiper problems as well.
